How We Comfort Ourselves

Since the beginning of our short lives we must learn how to comfort ourselves. This begins with self soothing like sucking our thumbs..rubbing our baby blanket between our fingers or even crying ourselves to sleep.

As adults..comforting ourselves takes many different methods..some good..some not so much.  Getting lost in a good book.. or a good movie or even better….comforting someone else who might have it worse.

I have witnessed many walking in the door after a hard day and cracking open a beer or lighting up a marijuana joint. Not terrible if it can be sporadic and stops before it becomes a beast that must be fed constantly.

What comfort techniques do you employ? Petting a kitty or doggie is a known activity that helps many. Staring at your fish tank for hours? How about an epic shopping trip? I know many women who if depressed will go shopping picking up something pretty to wear or an item for the house to cheer them up.

Whatever it is…if it is not a healthy comforting technique and will cause harm to you physically or emotionally down the road….get help professionally or reach out to a close family member or friend and work it out before it eats you alive…
