Recently we experienced a catastrophic storm. The damage to the physical area was obvious and profound. The problem goes deeper. The things I have heard some people say is mind boggling.
A wealthy woman at dinner in a local downtown restaurant was heard complaining about no power in her 6500 sq. foot condo on the water. She was nonplussed to think it had been two days since her electricity went off and she pays higher property taxes than some and should be first priority!
No thought whatsoever about the real and true suffering of those that lost their homes and businesses. Unfortunately many others have no compassion for anyone but themselves.
What creates a mindset like this? Were they indulged as children and not taught to care about the less fortunate? Maybe if they were dropped off to help bring water and food to needy families would be of some education. I believe everyone should donate personal time to volunteer in lending a hand to a fellow human in need, either in this country or somewhere else in the world. It is indeed an unhealthy mind to sit in your comfort, looking only to increase your pleasure, while turning a deaf ear and a blind eye to pain and suffering. On the other hand, people who give and reach out to others rarely have mental health problems. They have learned that helping others and doing good in the world is a higher purpose and creates a happy mind.
